Carl began officiating in 1980 in Long Beach, CA working various levels of HS and college football. In 1995, he was honored to follow in his father’s footsteps by being appointed to the officiating staff of the Pac-10 where he worked for five seasons.
He had the opportunity to work NFL Europe, eventually completing eight seasons there, three as a deep official and five as a referee. Following the 1999 NCAA season where he workedin both the Pac-10 and the WAC, he was added to the roster of officials in the NFL as a side judge. Carl became a referee in 2008.
Carl has worked many NFL post-season assignments including Super Bowl 51 (Atlanta vs. New England) in 2017 and Super Bowl 55 (Kansas City vs. Tampa Bay) in 2021. Carl serves as Vice President of the NFLRA Board, is a Director on the Board for the Boys and Girls Club Whittier and recently completed a term on the Board of NASO. Carl graduated from UC Irvine and has a MBA from University of Redlands.
He has worked over 30 years in the car battery industry. He resides in Southern California with his wife Nanette. They have two adult children.
